What's in Our Hydroseeding Mixture

Our truck we use for hydroseeding ready to head a property in Gardiner.

Our hydroseeding mixture, also known as a slurry, is made up of key elements needed for a lawn to grow quickly and in healthy conditions. Included in our slurry are:

  • Cottage blend grass seed: This is made up of 39% creeping red fescue, 34% Kentucky bluegrass, 16% annual ryegrass, and 11% perennial ryegrass.
  • Fiber mulch: Mulch helps protect the seeds as they grow and act as a weed barrier so undesired weeds don't pop up while the new grass is trying to grow,
  • Tackifier: Tackifier increases the stickiness of the mixture and helps ensure that it sticks to the soil, which is ideal for sloped or hilly areas of the property.
  • Fertilizer: A well-balanced fertilizer nourishes the grass while it grows, providing a healthy foundation for the blades.
  • And more!

Hydroseeding helps save on labor too since all these elements are applied in one visit instead of several different visits. It also gives you a lawn that looks the same all the way across since we use the same type of seed throughout the property.

Generally, we apply hydroseeding in spring or fall, as summer temperatures are too hot.

Tips to Maintain Your Hydroseeded Lawn in Kennebec County

A large property in Waterville, ME that we used hydroseeding to encourage a new lawn to grow quickly.

As with any newly seeded lawn, hydroseeded lawns in Kennebec County will require some maintenance after the service is performed. These are some of the tips we give to our hydroseeding customers regarding their new lawns:

  • Watering your lawn properly is critical. Depending on the weather, you may need to water several times a day or one time a day. You need to water enough to where the soil is always moist. If seeds begin to germinate and then dry out, the new grass can die. Too much water is also bad for the lawn, as it can wash out the new growth and create a weak root system.
  • The first mow should happen once grass blades are 2-3" high, typically 4-6 weeks after the lawn has been hydroseeded. Frequent mows during this time are advised, so long as your mower has sharp blades to cleanly cut the grass. It's also best to mow at a slower speed so the mower doesn't pull up any of the seedlings.
